The Christian Union is a friendly student-run group open to both Christians and non-Christians. We hold meetings on Friday lunchtime where we have food and social time as well as a talk or discussion about various topics from a Christian perspective. Topics covered include anything from lifestyle issues such as beauty and image, to biblical subjects such as prayer, to the big questions such as ‘Why does God allow suffering?’ We also have a meeting on Wednesdays for prayer and worship.
We are planning to run a youth alpha course. This is a basic introduction to Christianity aimed at young people. Each week looks at specific question that is central to Christianity starting with ‘Who is Jesus?’ and ‘Why did Jesus die?’ Throughout the course there will be plenty of opportunity for people to ask questions and discuss issues about our faith, and to introduce the course we are holding a ‘grill a Christian’ session where some guest speakers will be invited along to try and answer people’s toughest questions.
We also organise an annual outreach event called Soul in the School where we run a free café for students and offer help to teachers as a way of sharing our faith and serving the community.
As part of the wider Christian community we have a Joint CU with the boys’ school once every half term, and we also take part in the Impact weekend away in April which is run by a local organisation called PACE which is where all the local schools’ Christian Unions get together to encourage each other in our faith and to get to know one another.

Debating Club has a range of students from Years 10 to 13 who regularly attend the meetings on Monday lunchtimes, researching and discussing contemporary and moral issues, and practising the skills required for successful competitive debating. The club has also attracted the attention of some Year 8 students, who came along as an audience for a heated lunchtime debate on the motion ‘This House believes that it would be better if social networking sites, such as MySpace and FaceBook had never been invented’, and made very astute contributions to the floor debate.

Do you love reading? Come along to discuss your favourite books . . . and discover new ones! The first book we will explore is Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. Why is the series a world-wide success? What makes the character Edward so captivating?
The club is run by Mrs Morris and our Year 12 Library Assistant Francesca Brasington.

Come along to Science Club to walk on custard, make boomerangs, make slime (recipe at chemistry.about.com), build a lava lamp (more info at www.planet-science.com), make explosions of mentos and diet coke (great video at sciencesowhat.direct.gov.uk) and make rockets using film canisters, vitamin C tablets and water.

Throughout the year there are a variety of activities taking place in the Biology department.
For KS 3 students there are several Biology practicals run through the lower school science club. At KS 5 students have the opportunity to enter the Biology Olympiad and Advanced Extension Award in Biology.
A recent introduction has been an Earthwatch school group, which is open to students of all age ranges. There are meetings regularly to discuss relevant concerns. Much of the effort at present is being placed into improving the school nature reserve. This has included a number of weekend work parties undertaking bramble clearance, pond maintenance, removing trees and planting a new wildlife hedge. Clearing the pond of excess decaying organic matter is a difficult job, the scooped out material smelly and heavy. Although forks and other equipment helped carry this job out, students had to take great care not to damage the pond liner! Thursday evenings have seen several students involved in building bat boxes, information boards and insect boxes.
