Welcome to Key Stage 4
Years 9 – 11 are an exciting time for students as they start their new GCSE courses having selected four options to complement their core subjects of English Language and Literature, Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In addition, all students also follow programmes in PE, RE, PSHE as well as having some time available for Personalised Learning.
To help get to grips with the expectations of GCSE subjects Year 9 is seen as a foundation year providing the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required for success in Years 10 and 11.
Key Stage 4 is also a time for looking to the future and we encourage our students to use some of their time to learn new skills and actively pursue existing hobbies and interests in areas such as drama, music, sport and organisations such as the Guides, Cadets and voluntary work. At Parkstone we encourage our students to take opportunities to expand their horizons and these additional activities add to our students’ education, providing opportunities for them to take a wider view of life, supporting their personal and emotional development.
Towards the end of Year 10 and into Year 11 students will start to consider the opportunities beyond GCSEs; perhaps what to do in the Sixth Form or in the work environment. To support this our Year 10 students complete Work Experience in the Summer Term. For many this is a new experience and opportunity to learn new skills, taste a possible future career and sample what the workplace is like. Early in the Autumn Term of Year 11 there will be an opportunity to find out about types of courses and breadth of subjects available for Post-16 study as well as attending our highly regarded Careers Convention.
