CAREERS – AN EMPLOYERS GUIDE
As a school we provide lots of information and guidance to our students.
The school prides itself on the Careers provision it provides having been awarded the Quality in Careers Standard via Investors in Careers, achieved the highest 5 stars on the Employers Charter and the Careers Coordinator being awarded Careers Leader of the Year 2018.
The school has a comprehensive Careers library which holds hard copy prospectuses for most universities, and colleges and details on many Careers. Students can access this during the general library opening hours.
There are designated Careers noticeboards which are regularly updated, with hard copy notices going to tutors and a Careers section on Its Learning. (It`s Learning being a Virtual Learning Environment that students can access from anywhere)
Students in years 11, 12 and 13 have access to the dedicated Careers software Unifrog. There are also a large number of freely available Careers websites and some of these are listed under the useful websites section of the school website. Students are able to request 1 to 1 guidance to help with their choices. Some students are identified by the staff and automatically receive this additional support.
In years 10 and 12 students have the opportunity to participate in a week of work experience. Comprehensive work experience information is given prior to the event. Year 10 students have a launch parents evening with full details of how it will proceed. We are always keen to hear from local employers who would like to take one of our students. Work experience can be beneficial to business as well as to the student. See this article for more information https://www.asdan.org.uk/blog/2017/11/13/how-employers-can-benefit-from-offering-work-placements
The school is a member of the Dorset Young Chamber. This is kindly sponsored by Coles Miller Solicitors. They are also the Careers and Enterprise Adviser to the school. The aim of this joined up approach is to evaluate and increase our employer engagement to enhance the Careers and Employability provision.
A number of events are organised throughout the school year, including the highly successful Careers Convention. Work preparation tasks are completed within the Wellbeing programme and across the curriculum by linking subject lessons to real life Careers. On the website, under the curriculum heading are the curriculum booklets for each year group. This gives an indication as to what is being covered. Students take part in Mock Interviews and writing CV`s.
As an employer reading this are you aware of the changes to the exam grading? Will you know what a GCSE grade 9 is? This is of real concern to our students and may come as a surprise to you. See this employers guide https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/gcse-new-grading-scale-factsheets
If you have any questions regarding anything Careers related or your business runs any events or would like to potentially be involved with the school please contact Mrs J Wilkinson Head of Careers & Employability. Julia.wilkinson@parkstone.poole.sch.uk
